My true friend
Tells the truth
About the bad, and about the good.

My true friend knows that sometimes
The truth hurts
And hearts hurt
And life hurts: 
My true friend treads gently.

My true friend knows my faults
And might even point them out--
--only if it's necessary--
but doesn't dwell on them.

My true friend knows I'm sorry
Before I say it
And even though I have to say it
The "sorry" was already heard and answered.

My true friend is sincere
My true friend knows I'm fragile
And reminds me I am strong
My true friend knows which troubles to laugh off
And which ones need tears.

My true friend loves me and teaches me how to love
My true friend.
