Hubbub

There was quite the to-do at work yesterday. The referendum for our school district didn't pass on May 3rd, which meant that according to the district's plan, we would be cutting transportation, closing at least 2 schools, and eliminating art, music, p.e., and librarians from the elementary schools. Now, the plan called for the library to still be open, but only to be staffed by a clerk (who, coincidentally, is not required to have any training in library or education).

During a "work session" on Tuesday night, the administration discovered that thanks to a grant and some restructuring of debt (if I understood the e-mails and news correctly), they had a few million dollars they could play with. They decided to use that money--in part--to keep art, music, and p.e. in the elementary schools.

On the positive side, those are good things to keep, and I am so happy to think that our kids will still be getting exposure to the arts and to physical fitness!

On the negative side, it's not a "done deal" yet, not until the board votes on it. And the recall of those programs did not include librarians.

I know that this is a personal bee-in-the-bonnet, but honestly: there is research proving that schools with a library AND a full-time media specialist (trained in library and education) have higher reading scores than other schools, even after correcting for other possible causes. We want higher scores, we want kids who read...but we think we don't need librarians.

Anyway, yesterday was a mixed bag of emotions, for sure. The end of the year is looming closer and we're all just trying to get through. I'm trying to put books away for the last time I'll put them away in this library, and it's a struggle not to cry all day. As much as I will miss my school family, I will be glad when it's finally time to just move on. Slow goodbyes are, I think, the worst.
